My Guiding Journey - Mdm Samsia Sulaiman

(Mdm Samsia (left)) Which years were you involved in Guiding in and in what capacity? I was entrusted with Brownies CCA in 2009, after 14 years in charge of TAF Club. At that time, Brownies was not a popular CCA in the school and I knew nothing about Brownies. I asked my then P2 daughter to join Brownies in her school so that I could have one more avenue to learn songs and gain new ideas of activities to share with my Brownies. I discovered that collaborating with others made Brownies CCA much more interesting and exciting, and the girls gained valuable experience too. For example, our Brownies helped Food From The Heart (FFTH) to pack food items for the needy and volunteering with our school’s Environment Club to pick up litter at East Coast Park. We even brought them to the Zoo as a reward at the end of the year. Please share with us a few of your thoughts on how Guiding has shaped you/your character and impacted you as a Guider? The Brownies programme is very meaningful as it caters to girls of all abilities and background. Guiding is about developing oneself holistically to be a better person. I love working with girls and it is very rewarding seeing them grow to become more empowered and independent. I encourage my girls to sign up for as many HQ-led activities as possible, whenever these match our schedule, as I believe the more they are exposed to good programmes, the more knowledge and skills they will acquire. (Mdm Samsia (Right) at the Asia Pacific Regional Conference of Leaders for Girls 2018.) How involved are you in Guiding today? I volunteer whenever I can - I was in the Handbook and International Committees previously and am currently helping the Brownie Branch. When I send my girls for a camp, I will try to play a proactive role, even though I may not be in the organising committee. As a Teacher-Guider, we too must uphold the Guide Promise and the Guide Law. What words of encouragement do you have for our Guiders today as they all seek to impact the lives of their girls? Believe that you can play a part in Guiding no matter how small your contribution is. Never undermine your talent. Let your voice be heard. By being actively involved in Guiding, be it at school, division or HQ level, we can display the character traits we wish for our girls to emulate. We are all made to make a difference; let’s embrace every opportunity to do so.
