GGS Celebrates World Thinking Day 2023

At GGS’ World Thinking Day 2023 celebrations on 18 Feb, more than 7500 members took the Green Nation Pledge to help make Singapore a green, liveable and climate-resilient home. GGS also pledged as an organisation at Champion level to be sustainability ambassadors and advocates for green practices to build a sustainable future for our nation and our world.

Minister Grace Fu joined the event at Jurong Secondary School in support of GGS’ commitment to develop girl and women leaders, who will advocate for sustainability and greater environmental consciousness in the community.

GGS members also took part in the inaugural GGS Wide Game Plogathon – a digital scavenger hunt, creatively conceptualised by GGS’ Young Adults to kickstart its sustainability plans for 2023, challenging participants to complete a series of missions, while picking up and sorting litter.

Minister Desmond Lee officiated the WTD 2023 Formal Ceremony, where he presented Advocacy Mentorship Programme certificates to the River Valley High School Girl Guides. He recognised the positive impact of GGS’ efforts to support holistic development of girls and women as well as our advocacy for causes linked to the UN SDGs, which impact Singapore and the world.

GGS is rolling out many exciting Guiding life skills training programmes to empower girls who will lead initiatives for building sustainable, peaceful and safer communities. At GGS, we truly believe that every girl can ‘Speak Out, Speak Up and Take Action’ to build a brighter future for our world!

Making an Impact

Ms Tan Ah Bitt (Far Left) – Recipient of Asia Pacific Region service to Girl Guiding & Girl Scouting (Camp Committee Member) Which years were you involved in Guiding and in what capacity? 1978-1981                           Girl Guides as CCA in a Secondary School – Company Leader 1982-1984                          Ranger of 12th Senior Branch (Central) 1985 to  Present                Ranger Guider 2004-2009                        Volunteer Adult Leader in CHIJ Katong Convent (Received a Partners-in-Education Award in 2009 from CHIJ KC). 2011-2018                          Ranger Guider and a member of Camp Committee   Please share with us a few of your thoughts on how Guiding has shaped you/your character and impacted you as a Guider? I am very much guided by The Guide Promise, Guide Law and the Guide Motto “Be Prepared”.  I was a Ranger so I had to take this Guide Promise out to a wider world.  I did that by representing Singapore in 1988 for the Mountain Spirit programme in Alberta, Canada as a Guider and in 1993 Ship for South East Asia Youth Programme (SSEAYP) because the Senior Branch in Singapore Girl Guides Association was considered a youth organisation. I was nominated as an Assistant Youth Leader and helped to lead the Singapore Contingent – my Guiding leadership skills came in useful for this challenging job. I feel that the 5-Point Programme had enabled me to develop into a better teenager – I was able to handle different aspects of life during my teenage years.  I was given opportunities to exercise my creativity, innovativeness and leadership roles.  Proficiency badges programme also allowed me to explore different areas of interests as a young girl. The passion of joining as a Ranger, was fuelled on by the Guiders & Commissioners I met during my Ranger years.  They taught me skills and knowledge which sometimes may be out of the Guide Book context. They had showed me what is Guiding all about by living in the BP’s Spirit. Like the song itself “I’ve got the BP Spirit ..where?… Deep in my heart! As a Ranger Guider, I helped to train the young adult leaders – to bring the best out of them.  During my Ranger days, my 12th Senior Branch Unit did a lot of yeomanship too. So, “Be Prepared to Lend a Helping Hand” became my motto in my daily living. How are you involved in Guiding today? I am currently volunteer with Camp Committee as a member.  I contribute my knowledge and skills in conducting workshops for Knots and Lashing. As a member of the Camp Committee, I played different roles in the International Camps or annual camps that GGS has conducted throughout the 7 years. By sharing my skills and knowledge, I hope that more Brownies, Guides and Guiders will learn to keep the spirit of life-long learning and to be a useful Guide. What are some word of encouragement do you have for our Guiders today in impacting the lives of their girls? We will not know the impact of our Girl Guide teaching until you see them later in life when they become good citizens of Singapore, when they become mothers and grandmothers. The joy of seeing that the Spirit of Guiding still shining strongly in many of us who still stands by the Guiding Mission, especially this sisterhood of Guiding. Be Prepared – to give Guiding as a gift to all the girls that you know. Your presence with them now is the gift to our future womanhood! Teach them well and you will feel rewarded in your heart. When you love this game of Guiding, you will find much happiness in it with love, joy and gratitude.
